Mitigating Climate Change Requires Broad Approach To Energy In spite of their rich history, biologically derived sources of energy like wood, grass, dung and alcohol have failed to ignite the public "buzz" of the other renewables: solar, wind or even geothermal. Worse yet, for some, "bio" can conjure images of clear-cut forest land, dead zones in lakes and oceans, and choking carbon emissions — the opposite of sustainable development. In reality, bio-based energy has the largest market presence, involves the most stakeholders and has the greatest economic impac... More

Biomass facilities across the state banked their future on Gov. Jerry Brown's signing of Senate Bill 859 on Wednesday, which gives energy providers incentive to consider bioenergy and purchase electricity from those plants. The bill will allow bioenergy plants to stay in business or at least that is the hope. Contract negotiations between power companies and bioenergy plants will work out the details of who will stay afloat. Current contracts with power companies with will term out by the end of this year, leaving many biomass plants scrambling to sign new deals. SB 859, along with Assem... More

Agenda: Why biomass is unlikely to make a significant contribution to the world’s energy needs

CLOSE examination of the power from biomass argument is sobering. The majority of the world’s biomass fuels for national scale power generation are derived from trees. Since trees are replaceable these fuels are considered “renewable” hence UK power stations running on wood pellets can qualify for subsidies. It is argued that the carbon released by burning biomass was previously absorbed from the atmosphere and is part of the planet’s carbon cycle so if taken from sustainable forests the CO2 released when burning will be re-absorbed by new plantings rendering ...
